RHS Garden Wisley is one of the Royal Horticultural Society’s four gardens. With its amazing Glasshouse and a range of different garden areas, it is a perennial treat for over a million visitors. Inside Outside has worked with RHS Wisley for a number of years, supplying marquees for various events.
Earlier this year, we were asked to supply a marquee for a new purpose.
Alongside its plant centre, RHS Garden Wisley runs a very successful gift shop selling a wide range of quality products – from children’s toys to jewellery. As for any retailer, Christmas is an opportunity to increase turnover and this year RHS Garden Wisley decided that more space was required to merchandise its festive range more successfully and to accommodate the increased customer footfall that inevitably occurs leading up to Christmas. They turned to Inside Outside to help.
We installed two 12m x 5m marquees to extend the gift shop, creating an additional 1300 square feet of retail space. The marquees are attached to the front of the shop and also incorporate the entrance to the coffee shop. Three sets of glass double doors create entrance/exit points for the temporary space and RHS-branded signage aids the customer experience. Clear PVC window walls and clear gable ends allow natural light to enter and creates a more spacious feel.
Inside, we installed solid boarded and carpeted flooring. To ensure an ambient temperature we’ve provided a ducted heating system and, to minimise condensation that will naturally occur within the space, we have developed a unique anti-condensation system in the roof space. The roof space itself is lined for a visually pleasing appearance, and the marquee legs discreetly disguised using white drapery.
RHS Garden Wisley attracts a wide range of visitors and accessibility is always key. To ensure the new temporary entrances would be fully accessible we installed ramps so that no customer will feel excluded from visiting the shop.
The temporary space has allowed RHS Garden Wisley to offer a wider than usual range of Christmas decorations and seasonal gifts, providing visitors with much greater choice. Working within additional space means that the Christmas range doesn’t compromise the space available for existing product lines and, importantly, the overall look and feel of the shop is much more spacious.
Lucy McVeigh, Duty Manager at RHS Garden Wisley Retail says: “This new space has been in operation since November and we are delighted with how it’s working. Christmas Glow, which opened on Friday 1 December, attracts so many people who want to enjoy the gardens in their illuminated glory and the additional retail space means a more pleasurable shopping experience for all.”
