A chair is a chair – or is it? Definitely not when it comes to planning what people will sit on at a wedding or special event. Coming up with a theme – even if it’s as simple as working around your favourite colour – is key to creating a unified look for an event and every detail should be influenced by that theme, right down to the choice of chairs if you’re planning a seated meal.
When you book your marquee we’ll work with you on the logistics of seating your guests to ensure that the space is used to best effect and no one feels cramped. When it comes to tables, round tables of 5-6ft diameter seat 8-10 people comfortably and make socialising easy whilst eating. Covered in crisp linen tablecloths and dressed with place settings and floral arrangements, tables are fairly easily sorted. But chairs need a little more thought because they remain on display, which is why it’s always good to go to specialist hire companies such as Bentley Brown who will be able to supply the right furniture for your event – they definitely know their Classic Gilt from their Chiavari!
Is everyone sitting comfortably?
Choosing beechwood slatted folding chairs for a rustic wedding would work perfectly well, but imagine the same at an elegant and sophisticated wedding – they would look very out of place, which is why there are so many styles to choose from! Whether you’re planning a Christmas party and are transforming your marquee into a winter wonderland, are celebrating a milestone birthday with a Hollywood-themed party or are organising an English country garden themed wedding for next spring or summer, the style of chair you choose will have a surprisingly big impact on the overall look and feel of your event.
So alongside standard folding chairs in wood or metal, you’ll also come across the Chiavari chair, an Italian design that dates back to 1807 and still looks stunning today. Or maybe you’d prefer an Ice or Ghost chair. Made of clear acrylic they’re almost invisible, hence the name, and so blend easily whatever your theme – they also rather cleverly create the illusion of space. Comfort should also be a consideration when making your choice, depending on how long you expect your guests to be seated at the table – it might dictate whether you choose a chair with a padded seat or not.
Colour also has an important part to play. For instance, gold suggests luxury and opulence, red is perfect for a romantic Valentine’s Day party, limewash is summery and light. And once you’ve selected the right chair you can then add accessories to further complement the theme – a sash or bow, or perhaps a colour-coordinated seat pad. There is also a growing demand for illuminated furniture, something easily achieved with all the available technology and will definitely give your event an extra dimension.
One final consideration is how you’ll furnish the bar area or chill-out area in your marquee – you’ll undoubtedly need some form of seating, whether it’s bar stools, cube stools, leather armchairs or comfy rattan sofas. Again, style is everything and your choice should be driven by your party theme.
