We pride ourselves on providing a personal service, so it seems only right that we give you a little insight into some of the key members of the Inside Outside team. To kick things off, we’d like to introduce you to Iain Booth, our Managing Director.
Iain took over the business 7.5 years ago, along with his wife Lynne. His route into the events industry was almost accidental. Having trained as a biochemist at university, he took a summer job with a furniture hire company, making deliveries into marquees. This led to a full-time job and he worked with the same company for almost 20 years. During this time, Iain came into regular contact with Inside Outside and liked the company’s commitment to excellent customer service. It’s an ethos that Iain believed in and, when the opportunity came up to buy Inside Outside, he jumped at the chance. Since then, he has worked tirelessly to make Inside Outside one of the leading marquee suppliers in the south east.
As MD, Iain is very hands-on in the business – there are no ivory towers at Inside Outside. He says: “Typically, my day starts at 7.15am. It’s quiet, the phone isn’t yet ringing, no one will be popping their head round the door to ask a question – it’s the perfect time to go through emails, check the diary and plan my day.
“With up to 10 installations every week and over 30 staff working in different locations at different times, there is always plenty going on and I like to keep in touch with what’s happening on current projects. Our Operations Manager gives me a daily briefing on how installations are progressing and I’ll then catch up with the Sales and Accounts teams so that I know what’s on the horizon. I also fulfil the role of Sales Manager, which means that I’m often out on the road. I carry out an average of five new site visits every week, usually within 40 miles of our premises in Bookham. Once back in the office there is paperwork to be completed for each site visit and client proposals to be prepared.
“I also regularly attend networking events. Networking is important in any industry, and it’s exactly the same in hospitality and events. There are a lot of people in our industry, and developing good working relationships with those who share our commitment to quality is something that I believe sets apart Inside Outside from our competitors. A fantastic party, wedding or corporate event isn’t created just by putting a marquee in a field – we want to help our customers create an amazing experience, which is why our services are so extensive.”
So what does Iain like most about his job?
“It has to be meeting new clients, working with them to create their special event and ensuring there is always a wow factor. Every time I meet a client I am genuinely excited to find out what challenge awaits us. And the ultimate satisfaction is seeing the look of delight on a client’s face when their marquee is complete and ready to be brought to life by the guests. Positive feedback after the event is something that we all look forward to – the comments and photos that are sent through after a party or event definitely put a smile on our faces.
And what of the future?
“We’ve all heard of the seven-year itch, but I can honestly say that Lynne and I haven’t felt it at Inside Outside! Part of our commitment to providing fantastic customer service is building a really strong team. We think that is very much in evidence already and our future is based on a shared vision and commitment to making Inside Outside the very best in the industry.”
